Do Stroll the Brooklyn Heights Promenade
For serious cases of summer fever, the only cure is the Brooklyn Heights Promenade (between Middagh and Remsen Sts, Brooklyn Heights). It’s hands-down the most romantic spot to take a date—or, hey, yourself—for a leisurely stroll. If the making-out-ready views of the Manhattan skyline leave you overheated, cool down with something from the nearby Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory
Do Attend the Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series
Held every summer at Wingate High School's Football field. Enjoy amazing music from chart topping artists. Past guests have been: Smoky Robinson, Jill Scott, John Legend, Estelle, Lauren Hill. But get there early the lines can get crazy! For names and dates go to brooklynconcerts.com
Do Visit the NEW Luna Park at Coney Island
It's great to have a full and remodeled amusement park at Coney Island again. So grab your sunglasses, sandals and take the Q train to Brooklyn's best known park.
Do Visit Brooklyn Academy of Music Friday & Saturday Nights
On Friday & Saturday nights B.A.M. has free musical performances in their cafe. Everything from Jazz to Folk to Blues. Before or after you listen to these awesome tunes feel free to purchase a ticket to anyone of the indie films in the B.A.M. theatres
Do inquire about visa requirements before travelling to the United States
Visitor visas are not necessary for Canadian citizens, or for citizens of Australia and the United Kingdom who are staying fewer than 90 days. A valid passport, a return-trip ticket, and proof of financial solvency are required; you'll be asked to fill out the Visa Waiver Form, I-94W, upon entry. Travelers who plan to stay more than 90 days can apply for the appropriate visa at the United States embassy or consulates in their home country. Canadian citizens need valid identification but neither a passport nor a visa to enter the United States.
Do Visit Brooklyn Museum the 1st Saturday of the Month
The Brooklyn Museum of Art closes their doors at 5pm on the 1st Saturday of every month then reopens them from 6pm-11pm. Its FREE to all. Meet great people and enjoy the awesome dance party at the end. There are usual great hands-on art projects, exhibits and tons of interesting people.
Don't Buy single ride Metrocards
NYC is so expensive so it's important to save money where you can. Always purchase a daily or weekly metrocard, especially if you'll be doing tons of sightseeing. A single ride is $2.50 but if you purchase a weekly metrocard and swipe 3 times a day you're only paying $1.17 per ride!
Do Have a drink at the Frying Pan
This "lightship"-a floating lighthouse once used by the Coast Guard—sank while docked in Maryland and spent three years underwater. Later salvaged, she is now a floating bar and café near Chelsea Piers. Sip a tiki drink, scan the pickup scene around you and meditate on the Hudson River beyond.
Do Enjoy a Movie
Nonprofit group Rooftop Films prides itself on screening an annual roster of independent flicks—all shown at outdoor venues, including Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn Tech and El Museo del Barrio, for $10. Despite the high-minded mission, the vibe is very mellow and light; there's often preshow live music, and attractive singles abound. Various locations, visit rooftopfilms.com
Don't forget about tipping
At restaurants, a 15% tip is standard for waiters; up to 20% may be expected at more expensive establishments. The same goes for taxi drivers, bartenders, and hairdressers. On package tours, conductors and drivers usually get $10 per day from the group as a whole; check whether this has already been figured into your cost. For local sightseeing tours, you may individually tip the driver-guide $1 if he or she has been helpful or informative. Ushers in theaters do not expect tips.
Do Attend Summer Stage Concerts!
In the summer NYC has FREE concerts in one park in each borough. Fortunately, I live (literally) right across the street from Crotona Park which is the park where the Bronx free concerts are held. Enjoy!!!!
